Data Backup FAQs
Data Backup
Q. Can I work on my computer whilst the back up is taking place?
- A. Yes. As the backups are incremental only after the first initial backup, you shouldn't notice any significant slowing of your broadband speed. The first full backup is best scheduled at a time you don't use the PC, however, in order for disruption to be minimised. The software also prompts you to do a back up when you shutdown your computer, so this is a good way of backing up your latest files.
Q. How do I schedule the back up to take place at the weekend or overnight?
- A. The software has a backup schedule, which enables you to choose the days of the week and times you want a back up to occur.
You can find out more about using Data Backup in our Knowledge Base
Q. How long will it take for the initial back up to complete?
- A. Initial backup may take some time and we recommend you back up chunks of your data at a time. It will take about two hours to upload one GB of data on a 1184 Kbps connection.
Data backup makes backing up easy, however. You can set the backup running but then pause at any time, without losing the ground you've already gained. The Data backup system will simply pick up where it left off when you set it running again.
We recommend you start your backup at a time you're not using the computer - but make use of the pause facility if you need to.
Q. Can I interrupt the initial back up i.e. to pause it and then resume at a later time so not to affect internet connectivity?
- A. Yes you can cancel the back up. All files that have transferred before you click cancel will have been sent to the server. Once you restart the back up, it resumes from where it left off.
Q. What happens when I reach the GB limit of my existing product, do I receive any notification?
- A. You can check how much 'Quota Usage' you have used in the software. Your back up will stop once this quota is reached.
Q. I have used all my storage. Now what do I do?
- A. To upgrade simply log in to our website clicking on the My Eclipse link on our homepage, and enter your registered email address and the password you chose when ordering the service. Once logged on, click on the Backup Manager to upgrade your service.
Q. Can I buy more than one licence on my PC giving me extra space?
- A. No. Only one licence is needed. Extra space can be ordered as above, in your 'My Eclipse' account. Your licence can only be used on one PC, however.
Q. What happens at the end of my FREE trial?
- A. If you want to keep your account after your free trial you’ll need to upgrade your account within the 30 day trial. Reminder emails are sent to you prompting you to do this. To upgrade simply login to My Eclipse, entering your registered email address and the password you chose when ordering the service. You can then select the PC Backup Manager to upgrade your service.
If you no longer require the software, Eclipse will delete your account and any data that you have transferred to your back up account will be lost. You will not be charged for the trial.
Q. What is the Privacy Policy for the Eclipse Data Backup Service?
- A. Eclipse do not know the content of all back up files
Eclipse will not conduct any cryptographic analysis on users' data
Eclipse will maintain the confidentiality of our users' data
Eclipse will neither sell nor provide users' data to a third party unless requested by law
Q. What do I need to install the Data Backup software?
- A. You need the following minimum PC Requirements:
Windows Operating System on your PC: ME, 2000, 2003, XP, Vista or 7
PC Memory: 256MB
PC Disk Space: 130MB
Administrator rights on the PC
A broadband connection
Please note that if this software is installed on PCs with multiple users, each user can access the other user's files.
Unfortunately this service is not compatible with MAC operating systems.
Q. How do I install the back up software?
- A. Once you have ordered the Data Backup service we will send you an email with a link to download the Data Backup software and installation instructions. We may not send you an email straight away as we need to build your account on our server, but this should be up and running within a couple of hours.
Q. How long does it take to back up files?
- A. The speed of the back up depends on the upstream speed of your broadband connection.
Please note that the initial back up of your files will take the longest. We recommend that you start an initial backup at the end of the day and leave this to run overnight, so that all your files can be transferred. Your files can only transfer as fast as the upload speed your broadband service is capable of.
After your initial back up is complete the software uses a technique called Incremental back up, which means it only back up changes you’ve made to your files since your last backed up. The back up storage holds different versions of your backed up files, so if you need to restore an earlier version of a file, you can do this.
Q. Can I use Data Backup as an archiving service?
- A. No, Data Backup is not intended to serve as an archive. That means you can't backup your files and then delete them on your own PC thinking they will be safe in our backup system. This is because each subsequent backup will update any changes - including changes in which files are deleted.
Q. How do I upgrade from a free trial to the 20GB service?
- A. To upgrade simply login to our website clicking on the My Eclipse button on our homepage, and enter your registered email address and the password you chose when ordering the service. You can the select the Data Backup Manager to upgrade your service. When you've done this, you need to do an initial backup once again, before scheduling your automated backups as before.
