Privacy settings 'need to be secure'
Date: 17 May 2010
People need to make sure they utilise privacy settings when on social networking sites, an expert has claimed.
Jon Prideaux, Deputy Chief Executive of SecureTrading, noted that fraudsters can take advantage of poor network security.
"If users' privacy settings aren't used to their full potential they are putting themselves at risk," he added.
By having the name of a pet or details of hobbies, Mr Prideaux stated that individuals may be able to use the data to breach server security.
As well as the financial implications of being hacked into, he remarked it is possible for identity theft to take place as well.
Names, addresses and date of birth should all be kept private when individuals are setting up sites, Mr Prideaux observed.
The Article 29 Working Party recently wrote to Facebook to express its dismay at changes the site has made to its privacy settings.
It is unacceptable that the company "fundamentally changed the default settings on its social-networking platform to the detriment of a user," it said.
